How Does an
Open Mic Work?

Our poetry open mics are open to everyone. You are given the opportunity to read one poem under 4 minutes! Our sign up list is available for sign up at the show.

Sign ups will be available only once doors open. Sometimes a line starts to form before doors open, so you may want to get there a little bit earlier as our open spots fill up fast!

If you don't get a spot that night, we do our best to guarantee you a spot the next show if possible when you put your name on the list. Just make sure to show up a little earlier the next time!

If you sign up for our membership, you get a discount to all of our Houston shows when you wait to pay at the door. If you plan on attending at least twice a month, you save money and get more access to cool perks and programming designed to help you write and share more poetry.

HOW DOES A POETRY SLAM WORK?

Signing up for our poetry slams works the exact same way as our regular open mics; however, they function a little differently. A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience.

Typically, the host or another organizer selects the judges, who are instructed to give numerical scores (on a zero to 10 scale) based on the poets' content and performance. The high score and the low score are dropped and the rest are added to give the poet their score for that round. The scores are added across the rounds and a final score it tallied and the top 3 scores win cash prizes.

Sometimes a line to sign up starts before doors open, so you may want to get there a little bit earlier as our open spots fill up! If you don't get a spot that night, we do our best to accommodate you with a spot the next show if possible. Just make sure you show up a little earlier the next show!
